Vitamin Angels is a lifechanging charity determined to provide underprivileged children with the vitamins they need to eliminate malnutrition. Founded in 1994 by Howard Schiffer, Vitamin Angels supplies lifesaving nutrition to 70 million women and children in 65 countries and all 50 U.S. states.
Sadly, more than a third of the world’s children are undernourished and don’t get enough vitamin A in their diets. Vitamin Angels works to provide this vital vitamin to children in need, helping prevent blindness and support healthy immune systems making children less susceptible to life-threatening illnesses like measles. By addressing this severe gap in nutrition, Vitamin Angels promotes better health for children, which leads to improved educational opportunities and an overall higher quality of life.
LEARN HOW VITAMINS MAKE AN IMPACT WITH JHANVI’S STORY
Jhanvi loves going to preschool. When she comes home at the end of the day, the three-and-a-half-year-old recites the rhymes she’s learned to her parents, Pinku and Sumanji. She does her homework and loves to play and create beautiful things with clay.
But for Jhanvi, this wasn’t always the case. At the age of two, she fell ill with dengue fever and had to be hospitalized. Unfortunately, this mosquito-borne disease is all too common in her community, and for many children growing up in Mumbai, even the simple childhood joys of playing can pose a threat. Exposure to illness in close quarters, lack of sanitation and walking with bare feet, coupled with limited access to nutritious, immune-boosting foods can make for a dangerous combination.
Luckily, Pinku learned about Vitamin Angels, and he brought Jhanvi to their deworming and vitamin A distributions happening nearby. Since then, Pinku reports that Jhanvi has been in good health, “By the grace of God, she is a very active child and does well at school. She has only become more active and stronger since receiving the vitamins. She also eats well and is gaining weight. She is happier,” Pinku said. Good health, Pinku believes, will keep a family together.
Lately, Jhanvi misses fewer days of school due to illness and is looking forward to starting Kindergarten next year. Pinku hopes to enroll his daughter in a good school that is close by where Jhanvi can continue to nurture her dream of becoming a teacher or a doctor.
