The Promise

Over 30 years ago, we made a promise to only use safer ingredients in our products. At the time, this wasn’t a popular decision, but it’s one we’ve stuck to since we manufactured our first product: Modere Shampoo.

One of the biggest decisions we made was to omit Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) from our shampoo. This was the first ingredient we eliminated, and that decision would go on to define who we are as a company. Our commitment to clean, safe, and effective products evolved from this simple idea of avoiding unnecessary ingredients.

Fast forward 30 years and we’re still an SLS-free company.

What is SLS?

It’s is a common additive in many cleaning and personal care products. You’ll find it in household cleaners, bars of soap, body and hand wash, and other shampoos (just not ours). It’s been labeled a cleaning chemical used to create foamy suds. People often mistake suds with cleansing power and effectiveness, but one doesn’t necessarily equal the other.

Somewhere down the line, more suds and foam from a product came to suggest healthy and clean and more bang for your buck. And while SLS may not be inherently harmful in moderation, some individuals are more susceptible to irritation. It can irritate eyes and skin and is hazardous to aquatic life.

As with any ingredient, because it can cause reactions in some individuals, that’s reason enough for concern.

Added chemicals may provide a rich lather, but peace of mind can only come from knowing the product you’re using is safely formulated. From day one, we decided to never add something like SLS to our products.

Today, that promise still stands.

We’ve sold over $6 billion in SLS-free products, such as shampoo, laundry detergent, and body wash. See for yourself why so many people are making the switch to safe.
