October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And it’s a great time to celebrate survivors and join the fight against breast cancer so that future generations can stay healthy and get the help they need.

There are lots of ways to get involved. From one-time participation to long-term commitments, there are many ways you can join the fight against breast cancer.

Here are just a few of the ways you can help!

  1. Purchase Beauty Products That Give

Estee Lauder, Ralph Lauren, and Paul Mitchell are just a few of the beauty product companies that offer “pink” products that donate a part of their proceeds to organizations that work to fight breast cancer.

  1. Invest in Pink Threads

Lands’ End sponsors the Pink Thread Project, which works with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation to donate 75 percent of the cost of every pink thread monogram to their research. Lands’ End is one of many clothing brands that donate to breast cancer organizations.

  1. Stay Informed

One of the best things you can do is stay informed about research regarding breast cancer. Sign up for newsletters from the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) or The Breast Cancer Site to stay educated about the causes, signs, and treatments of breast cancer.

  1. Spread the Word

Share the knowledge you have about breast cancer warning signs with friends and family. Encourage the women in your life to perform regular self exams, stay healthy, and regularly get mammograms if they are over 40.

  1. Komen Race for the Cure

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Series is the largest, most successful fundraising event for breast cancer in the world. The efforts help support early detection, research, and hope. This series occurs around the world annually and anyone is welcome to sign up or start a team.

  1. Susan G. Komen 3-Day

For a more ambitious trek, join this 60-mile, 3-day walk that builds hope, community, and education about resources for every participant.

  1. Find a Local Race

If there isn’t a Komen Race for the Cure in your neighborhood, there may be a different breast cancer walk or 5K nearby. Find a race near you and participate with a team of friends and family to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer.

  1. Buy HOPE

The HOPE brand was created by the NBCF to support women and research. HOPE offers “bundles” of hats, jewelry, mugs, and other items and will deliver a HOPE kit to a patient at one of their partner hospitals with every purchase. They also donate 100 percent of the net proceeds.

  1. Donate to the National Breast Cancer Foundation

You can forgo the gifts and simply donate to the NBCF, which provides breast health services to over 350,000 women across the country.

  1. Volunteer with NBCF

If you’d like to donate your time to the cause, the NBCF is always looking for volunteers to become a part of their virtual and outreach programs. These programs let you participate no matter where you live.

  1. Provide a Mammogram for a Woman in Need

Through the NBCF, anyone can provide a mammogram to a woman in need by donating $100—the average cost of a mammogram. This helps women without insurance or who are unable to afford medical care get the tests they need to detect breast cancer early.

  1. Start a Fundraiser

To be more active in the fight against breast cancer, you can start a fundraiser in your community. This can be anything from a benefit concert to a bowling tournament. Or you can host a fun race or hold an online fundraiser. NBCF has all the resources you need to start any fundraiser.

  1. Participate in Local Fundraisers

Although you might not have the time to host a fundraiser, keep an eye out for events in your community that donate funds to breast cancer research and education. Golf tournaments, color runs, or bake sales may be going on in your neighborhood, so find out where and get involved!

  1. Become a Sponsor

To make a big impact on the breast cancer fight, work with your employer to become a charity sponsor. Sponsor various charities across the nation that are working to fight breast cancer by creating a custom campaign that aligns with your business.

  1. Lead by Example

Join the fight against breast cancer by becoming a leader. Encourage others to participate in fundraisers and events that support cancer research; as well as get regular mammograms and follow smart cancer prevention practices.

  1. Wear Pink

Whether you dress in all pink at work, or simply don the pink ribbon that represents breast cancer awareness, publically show your support for breast cancer research and education. Spread the word about the dangers of breast cancer through your actions.

  1. Sign a Petition

Make your voice heard by supporting causes related to breast cancer awareness and research. There are always petitions out there asking for support of federal programs that help ensure women have access to lifesaving mammograms and ongoing cancer research.

  1. Share Your Story

Inspire others to take action during breast cancer awareness month by sharing your story—whether your fight against breast cancer, or that of someone close to you—on social media and in your community.

  1. Join the Pink Ribbon Army

Founded by The Breast Cancer Site, the Pink Ribbon Army is a Facebook app that supports cancer research at the Mayo Clinic. Contributions go to funding research for a cure, as well as funding mammograms for underinsured women in need.

  1. Take Part in Research

To help promote breast cancer research, you can volunteer to take part in a clinical trial or study. The American Cancer Society conducts numerous studies every year that examine cancer causes, prevention, and survivor issues. Participants in these studies help the ACS gather essential data.

  1. Write Emails to Decision Makers

Exercise your right as a citizen by reaching out to decision makers in your community and letting them know that funding cancer research and awareness is important to you. Letters to your local political representatives regarding increasing funding for cancer research can be a powerful way to get involved.

  1. Walk in Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

“Making Strides” conducts nearly 300 noncompetitive 3- to 5-mile events around the country that aim to unite survivors and supporters, as well as provide free, comprehensive information and support for those affected by breast cancer.

  1. Make Health a Priority

Help fight breast cancer by staying healthy and encouraging family and friends to do the same. Exercise regularly, eat healthily, and limit alcohol consumption to greatly reduce your chances of getting diagnosed with breast cancer.

  1. Share on Social Media

Spread awareness about the fight against breast cancer by using your own social media channels. Share research, event invitations, and uplifting messages to your community and help promote breast cancer awareness.

  1. Send Love to Survivors and Fighters

Whether someone in your family or someone in your community has been affected by breast cancer, reach out to them and show your love and support. Building and being a part of a supportive community is one of the best ways you can join the fight!

Conclusion

There are numerous ways you can get involved in breast cancer research and awareness, regardless of the time or financial commitment you are able to make.
